Storyboard for In/Out of the Box

The video sequence is expected to take from three to four minutes. The live performance part will take five to six minutes. There will be a music soundtrack for both parts.

Pre-performance instructions spoken to the audience	On your tables are some sealed boxes marked ‘In the box – shake’. Please shake them. [Note: each table will have several sealed boxes of different sizes with mysterious contents similar to what is in the video.]

live action	The woman walks on stage stiffly and stands inside the box, crowding in on top of three large stones. She is wearing black trousers, a black suit jacket, and a striped business-like blouse. Her appearance is heavy because, unknown to the audience at this point in time, she is wearing many layers of clothing. She faces the audience from within the box.
performance title	June 2007 The Crisis
live action	The woman takes off the jacket and flings it outside the box.She takes off the trousers and flings them outside the box, revealing another pair of similar trousers underneath.She takes off the striped blouse and flings it outside of the box, revealing a similar blouse underneath. She takes one of the stones and places it outside of the box in front of her. [Note: she has divested herself of British size 18 (American size 16). In each of these live action sequences, she gains more room to move.]

performance title	August 2008 The Resolution
live action	She takes off the trousers and flings it outside of the box, revealing a different type of trousers underneath, soft balloony tunic trousers with a batik design.She takes off the blouse and flings it outside of the box, revealing a different kind of top, a close-fitting jersey in a bright colour.She steps out of the box and takes out a set of bright LED poi. Lights dim. She begins to spin the move called ‘the butterfly’ with fluid body motion. She puts the poi into a black briefcase, puts on a tan linen business jacket, and walks briskly off the stage in this hybrid outfit.

post-performance instructions to the audience	Each of you has been given a small box marked ‘Out of the box’. Please open them. You may keep these. [Note: Each box will have a tiny colourful origami bird. Members of the audience may keep the small boxes and their contents.]
