Virgil and the Accelerators

I just want to get in another plug for Virgil and the Accelerators.   Their album is hot, and I mean that literally (just look at the cover).   If you get a chance to see them live in Aberystwyth or elsewhere, don’t miss it.

Here’s the link to their site where you can see what gigs are coming up and hear some samples: Virgil and the Accelerators

The BBC page has some reviews and user comments.

The Blues Matters site has a nice plug for Virgil at the recent Tenby Blues Festival. As we say in the States, ‘Way to go, Virgil!’

What I’m listening to…intricate guitars

Erik Mongrain percussive guitar “Fates” – reminds me of “Ice Flowers Melting” Finnish zither tape that I brought with me to China in the 1980’s. You can hear samples and see videos of his technique on his page:

Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia “Friday Night in San Francisco” – This is the original 1980 live recording.  Here is a clip from that show, and another.  The three got back together again for a reunion in 1996, which you can see here on YouTube.  We saw Paco in concert with his flamenco group in CA a number of years ago, quite amazing.

Today’s students

This clip from Kansas State University gives an interesting portrait of today’s students:

a short video summarizing some of the most important characteristics of students today – how they learn, what they need to learn, their goals, hopes, dreams, what their lives will be like, and what kinds of changes they will experience in their lifetime. Created by Michael Wesch in collaboration with 200 students at Kansas State University.
